Born in Belqas in Egypt’s Nile Delta in 1953, Mohamed Abla is a painter and multimedia artist whose work reflects the many layers of Egyptian society. Across painting, graphics and other media, he has built a distinctive practice shaped by travel, observation and a sustained engagement with the country’s social and cultural life.
Background and education
Abla graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Alexandria University in 1977. He later studied and travelled in Europe, including further work in graphics and sculpture in Switzerland and Austria.
Creative direction
His work often uses layered visual narratives to explore Egyptian identity, social realities and political change. Abla is also an important cultural organiser: in 2006 he founded the Fayoum Art Center, a meeting place for artists, workshops and creative exchange, and later helped establish a museum devoted to caricature.
