Hossam Dirar: Portraits of a Changing Cairo

Born in Cairo in 1978, Hossam Dirar is a multidisciplinary artist whose work moves between painting, photography, installation, video and graphic design. His practice looks at the many visual influences that shape contemporary Egypt, from the city’s changing architecture to its layered cultural history.

Background and education

Dirar graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Helwan University in 2000. He began his career in graphic design before developing a wider studio practice that combines digital imagery with traditional painting techniques.

Creative direction

His paintings are known for their richly built surfaces and expressive portraits, often developed with oil paint and palette knives. Across different media, he reinterprets Egyptian visual heritage, Cairo’s urban character and traditional iconography through a contemporary, sometimes cinematic lens.
